Whale Watching Season has begun in Sydney
Each year, the arrival of whale season brings anticipation and excitement to Sydney’s coastline. As of 16 May, the 2025 migration is officially underway, and Sydney Whale Whisperer is once again welcoming guests aboard for unforgettable encounters with humpback whales. This year, tours now depart from Darling Harbour, offering a refreshed route and a new way to experience one of nature’s most impressive events.
Whale watching season in Sydney runs from May to November. During this time, over 30,000 humpback whales migrate along Australia’s east coast between their Antarctic feeding grounds and northern breeding waters. Early in the season (May to July), whales are typically travelling north. From August through to November, they return south, often swimming closer to the coastline with their calves.
The migration path takes these whales right past Sydney, making the city one of the most accessible and reliable places to view them in the wild. With calm conditions and regular sightings, winter and early spring are ideal for planning a whale watching cruise.
In 2025, all tours now depart from King Street Wharf 6 in Darling Harbour. This central location offers easier access for visitors and a scenic start to each journey. The main highlight is, of course, the humpback whales. These giants are known for their acrobatics, with breaches, tail slaps and fin waves commonly observed.
