2025 Whale Watching Recap
As the year comes to a close, we are reflecting on everything that made the 2025 whale watching season such a significant one for Sydney Whale Whisperer. This year marked our first full season departing from Darling Harbour’s King Street Wharf, offering a new starting point for an experience that remains centred on small groups and close encounters with migrating humpback whales.
From June through to November, guests joined us on whale watching tours that combined Sydney Harbour views with time spent beyond the heads, where whales travel close to the coastline. The move to Darling Harbour made access easier for many visitors, while still allowing us to reach key whale sighting areas efficiently.
Throughout the season, sightings were steady and varied. Early months brought active whales travelling north, while later in the year we often encountered mothers and calves moving south at a slower pace. These later weeks allowed for longer viewing moments and quieter conditions on the water.
Guests regularly observed surface behaviour such as fin waves, tail lifts, and close passes alongside the vessel. Dolphin sightings and seabirds were also common, adding to the overall experience. With smaller group sizes onboard, everyone had space to move around and take in the moment without feeling rushed, and sightings reflected the diverse marine life found along Sydney’s whale migration route.
Departing from Darling Harbour for the first time gave the 2025 season a distinct feel. Each cruise began with views of Sydney’s harbour landmarks before heading into open water, creating a smooth transition from city to ocean.
While the departure point changed, the core of the experience remained the same. Tours continued to focus on respectful wildlife viewing, experienced crew commentary, and a more personal approach than larger operators. This balance allowed guests to enjoy whale watching in Sydney without crowds or unnecessary noise.
With the 2025 season now complete, attention turns to the year ahead. Whale watching tours will return in June 2026, once the annual humpback migration begins again along the east coast.
